Board Member Vacancies

The Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury admit and regulate notaries public in England and Wales. There are approximately 730 notaries in England and Wales, who are legal officers of ancient standing. The functions of notaries include the preparation and execution of legal documents for use abroad, attesting the authenticity of deeds and writings, and protesting bills of exchange. Notaries in England and Wales may also provide any non-contentious legal service, including conveyancing and probate activities. They provide a crucial role in international commerce.

Various board positions are available for applicants with an interest in the provision of legal services, qualification and accreditation, and governance:

  • Advisory Board – advises the regulator on policy matters
  • Qualifications Board – advises on the qualifications required to become a notary
  • Audit Committee – monitors the governance and finances of the Faculty Office.

The Faculty Office is looking for board members from “lay” applicants who have never before been qualified to practice as any kind of lawyer in England and Wales and can bring their judgement and experience to bear to ensure that the profession is properly and prudently run. For the Qualifications Board a background in higher or legal education would be helpful, and for the Audit Committee a background in finance and/or governance. For the Advisory Board you should have an interest in policy, regulatory affairs or consumer rights.

Application is by CV and covering letter expressing your interest and suitability for the role. Applicants may apply for some or all of the roles available. While unremunerated, reasonable expenses are paid, and the roles offer useful experience for applicants wishing to enhance their experience at Board level and who thrive on working in regulatory, policy and professional educational matters.
